[synopsis] => Raja had always wanted to have a pet like the happy kids in his school books did. But most yard animals in India worked. They weren't for play. Nevertheless, when Raja stumbled upon a scared, baby camel, he took her home and made her his own pet. But it wasn't long before there were smashed pots! Broken fences! And a big mess everywhere! Kamal was a wild camel with wild ways! Raja's father was not pleased. "We don't have time for camels. We're too busy herding goats," he warned.

Raja loved his new pet but his father is fed up with the mess and determined to sell her at the next fair. Will Raja find a way to keep Kamal or will they lose each other forever? This tale of unconditional love and hope is sure to enchant any child!

The best book for teaching the power of empathy and perseverance. Raja's Pet Camel by Anita Nahta Amin carries the key message of perseverance, tradition and love supported by the many advocates of positive parenting solutions. It'll sit comfortably on your shelf alongside other books that focus on overcoming obstacles and focusing on hope in the name of love. Like the work of Gaia Cornwall (Jabari Jumps) and Adir Levy (What Should Danny Do?).This book comes with a free Reader's Guide for children. The guide is available for free download from the publisher website. Lesson plans, activities and discussion questions to allow parents, teachers and caregivers to explore the topic further and deepen comprehension. Anita Nahta Amin is an Indian American author of children's fiction and nonfiction books. She has over 100 published short stories and articles in children's literary magazines and educational resources.

Born and raised in the United States, she is the daughter of Indian immigrants. Her family roots stretch across North India, from the royal desert of Rajasthan to the bustling river city of Kolkata.

She earned a BSE, Biomedical Engineering and Electrical Engineering from Duke University and an MS, Computer Engineering from NC State University. She first designed microcomputers, then worked for many years as an information technology business consultant, and later, IT manager.

But for more than a decade, she has been following her passion – writing for children.

She lives in Florida with her husband and twin children. Raja had always wanted to have a pet like the happy kids in his school books did. After school one day, Raja befriends a baby camel that follows him home.
A wary Bapu agrees to allow the camel to stay until they can find the animal a permanent home. Delighted, Raja is hopeful that he can convince his father to allow Kamal to stay with them forever. Unfortunately, however, Kamal is "a wild camel with wild ways" and becomes so destructive and disruptive that Bapu insists on selling the camel at an upcoming fair. In a last-ditch effort to keep Kamal, Raja tries to train his new pet to participate in the annual camel race, thinking that if Kamal wins the large cash prize, Bapu will change his mind and allow the animal to stay. But at the fair and the race, Kamal misbehaves again, making it impossible for Bapu to sell her. The book's ending is more of a cliffhanger than a real conclusion to its meandering plot, and readers are left guessing whether or not Raja will keep Kamal forever. The illustrations are equally confusing, pairing mostly turbaned, traditionally dressed adults with a bareheaded protagonist clad in button-down shirt and shorts. The only women depicted appear in the occasional background. The book ends with "10 Facts About the Thar Desert in India"
